< PreviousA FRIENDSHIP FORMED OVER A COMMON BOND 20 18 We are so grateful that you believe hope is a powerful medicine. Thank you for making these special moments possible and for being a ray of hope in our community! Families who attend an annual HopeKids picnic enjoy delicious food, a bounce house, crafts, face painting, and more. However, HopeKids Lila and Linnea would say the most important part of this day is the forging of friendship. In 2018, Lila and Linnea first met at this picnic, where they bonded over their bald heads while both were in the middle of cancer treatments. They are now freshmen in high school, in remission, and are still friends! Your gift helps provide these kinds of events--where friendships like Lila and Linnea’s can form. Children and their families can connect with others who “get it”, and find hope in the fact that they are not alone in their journey! Each month we schedule a variety of sporting events, live entertainment, museum visits, or other types of fun activities for the whole family. We focus on five research-driven impact areas to ease the journey for families who are walking through the hardest time in their lives: Hope and Anticipation to keep kids looking forward to the next fun event around the corner. Family-Focused events bring the family together and prevent siblings from being unintentionally overlooked. Community and Support fosters lasting relationships among people who share similar challenges. Safety and Acceptance through HopeKids’ supportive peer community where no child is the only one wearing a mask or using a wheelchair. Economic Support through free events because all families are seriously impacted by overwhelming medical costs. HOPECOMMUNITY PROGRAM HopeKids events work to foster a support community among families who “get it.” Our HopeCommunity program intentionally builds intimate events to bring together families struggling with similar diagnoses or who live in proximity to each other. These events focus on providing opportunities for families to deepen relationships and build a strong support network at a time when they need it most. One of the most inspiring moments is when a child who has just been diagnosed with a particular condition meets a child who has been healed from that same condition. You can almost see their hope restored as they realize that this battle is one they can win. VIRTUAL PROGRAM Many of our families find themselves isolated due to their child’s medical condition. Families spend weeks and months in the hospital, or have to travel across the country for specialized treatments. This can leave them feeling disconnected and alone during a difficult season. However, through HopeKids’ virtual program, we can bring hope to our families with fun and unique programming, no matter where their circumstances find them. From virtual book clubs to online cooking classes, these events can be attended in the safety of their homes or hospital beds, and connect families like never before. Virtual programming expands the reach of our community beyond each chapter and fosters incredible connections between parents, siblings, and children with life- threatening illnesses. It’s introducing new friends who may never meet in person– but who are bonded in hope–knowing they are not alone.
