< Previous20 YEARS20 YEARS CELEBRATINGCELEBRATING OF HOPE FOROF HOPE FOR THE FUTURETHE FUTURE HopeKids launched in September 2001 in Phoenix, Arizona, with a goal of providing hope to families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Over the past 20 years, five additional chapters launched and the ongoing calendar of free events continued to grow. Today, HopeKids serves almost 5,500 families and provides over 2,400 events across the nation. It’s your support that makes this milestone extra special and we are so grateful to be celebrating with you!HOPEDAY PROGRAM HopeKids provides ongoing events and activities for families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Each month we schedule a variety of sporting events, live entertain- ment, museum visits, or other types of fun activities for the whole family. We focus on five research-driven impact areas to ease the jour- ney for families who are walking through the hardest time in their lives: Hope and Anticipation to keep kids looking forward to the next fun event around the corner. Family-Focused events bring the family together and prevent siblings from being unintentionally overlooked. Community and Support fosters lasting relationships among people who share similar challenges. Safety and Acceptance through HopeKids’ supportive peer community where no child is the only one wearing a mask or using a wheelchair. Economic Support through free events because all families are seriously impacted by overwhelming medical costs. HOPECOMMUNITY PROGRAM HopeKids events work to foster a support community among families who “get it”. Our HopeCommunity program intentionally builds intimate events to bring together families struggling with similar diagnoses or who live in proximity to each other. These events focus on providing opportunities for families to deepen relationships and build a strong support network at a time when they need it most. Recent studies show that parents who have a child with cancer often fear the complete loss of hope because it would be like giving up on their child and a future with their child. In addition, 59 percent of siblings of a cancer patient showed new externalizing behaviors such as acting out at home or school, fighting, drug use, increased sibling rivalry, and lower frustration tolerance. Twenty-six percent showed new internalizing behaviors such as worry, anxiety, depression, sleeping, or eating problems. Adolescent siblings of children with cancer who have low social support tended to be perceived as being more anxious and having more behavior problems than adolescents with high social support. Support, love, and encouragement are all necessary for families who have a child with cancer or some other life-threatening medical condition. Our community of children and their families get to know each other, encourage, and support each other. We have children who are newly diagnosed, children who are in the midst of difficult treatment, and children who are healed and now healthy. One of the most inspiring moments is when a child who has just been diagnosed with a particular condition meets a child who has been healed from that same condition. You can almost see their hope restored as they realize that this is a battle they can win. OUR PROGRAMS “HopeKids has been such a blessing to our family. Times have been so hard for many people, including our family. Not only have we been dealing with the craziness of the world over the past year, we have had multiple health scares and surgeries for our HopeKid. These events bring so much joy to us and allow our family to forget about the stressors of life. We can truly enjoy life to the fullest, even if for just an evening.” - Jen, Orion’s mom Program Costs HopeDay: $2,236,780 HopeCommunity: $1,215,900 *From 2021 Form 990Each HopeKids chapter has a private Facebook forum for parents to share resources, ask questions about treatment plans and, most importantly, find community. Catherine, Torin’s mom, shared a photo in the forum of a note written on a UPS package slip hoping that she’d be able to find the author, who didn’t know that Torin’s family was already a HopeKids family. Hope unfolded in the comments section of the post. PACKAGE ORDERED HOPE DELIVERED This was left with our UPS delivery Friday late afternoon. Does anyone deliver around here? We have a sign on our door explaining why we don’t ever come to the door (kiddo with cancer). It made both my husband and I smile big. Our whole family has been so grateful for this community over the past few years! - Catherine, Torin’s mom That was me. Our family has been blessed personally by HopeKids and I’m always looking for ways to share this group with others. I’m glad the note was a bright spot in your day. - Jeff, Bete’s dad It was indeed a bright spot! We might have done a little “someone else gets it” dance after a looooong week. - CatherineVOLUNTEERS all HopeKids acr oss chapters donated 5,461 HOURS in 2021 to families who have a medical condition child with a life-threatening2021///////////// Number of FamiliesNumber of EventsNumber of Attendees ARIZONA 1,50142712,013 COLORADO 6713376,185 KANSAS CITY 4503757,342 MIDDLE TENNESSEE 1782002,348 MINNESOTA 1,60262214,981 NORTH TEXAS 1,0904827,502 TOTAL 5,4922,44350,371 Arizona | 54 Colorado | 31 Kansas City | 38 Middle Tennessee | 35 Minnesota | 85 North Texas | 59 = 5 Families in review New Families EnrolledASSETS 20212020 CURRENT ASSETS Cash and Cash Equivalents$ 3,131,717$ 2,275,757 Investments650,282780,581 Contributions Receivable38,30439,789 Prepaid Expenses and Other Assets153,53018,647 Total Current Assets3,973,8333,114,774 PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT, NET11,06715,096 TOTAL ASSETS $ 3,984,900$ $3,129,870 LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS CURRENT LIABILITIES Total Liabilities$ 20,676$ 24,259 NET ASSETS Without Donor Restrictions3,599,2162,746,540 With Donor Restrictions365,008359,071 Total Net Assets3,964,2243,105,611 TOTAL LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS $ 3,984,900$ 3,129,870 Statements of Financial Position December 31, 2021 and 2020Statements of Activities December 31, 2021 and 2020 Without Donor Restrictions With Donor RestrictionsTotal 2021 Without Donor Restrictions With Donor RestrictionsTotal 2020 SUPPORT AND REVENUES Contributions$ 2,602,004$ 144,921 $ 2,746,925$ 1,960,532$ 46,084 $ 2,006,616 Special Event Income, Less Direct Donor Benefit of $229,894 and $163,388, Respectively526,118-526,118369,515-369,515 Contributed Goods and Services1,708,377-1,708,3771,384,473-1,384,473 Investment Income, Net(1,276)-(1,276)31,545-31,545 Other17,794-17,79419,184-19,184 Net Assets Released from Restrictions138,984(138,984)-250,016(250,016)- Total Support and Revenues4,992,0015,9374,997,9384,015,265(203,932)3,811,333 EXPENSES Program Services$ 3,476,686- $ 3,476,686$ 2,989,003- $ 2,989,003 Management and General263,526-263,526304,083-304,083 Fundraising399,113-399,113331,286-331,286 Total Expenses4,139,325-4,139,3253,624,372-3,624,372 CHANGE IN NET ASSETS852,6765,937858,613390,893(203,932)186,961 NET ASSETS, BEGINNING OF YEAR2,746,540359,0713,105,6112,355,647563,0032,918,650 NET ASSETS, END OF YEAR $ 3,599,216 $ 365,008 $ 3,964,224$ 2,746,540$ 359,071 $ 3,105,611HOPE IS A POWERFUL MEDICINE.Next >
